TAFE Youtu.be Videos

I know. Your not ment to share assignment details, etc. This time they asked us to literally run damaging viruses on our systems. I did it in a VM (Windows XP Mode because I’m cheap). So here it is!

*Hint* Click full screen its in 720p. Well actually 900p but close enough.

Google Gears for Firefox 3.6

I found this hidden away on a thread in Google code. I felt I’d share it with the world (I take no credit for it’s creation).

Windows (32 Bit for Firefox 3.6)

Linux (64 Bit for Firefox 3.6)

Gears Install (Must be run first)

Oh look a post!

Yeah. So It’s been a while. I don’t really have a lot to write about and due to the fact that I’m now back at TAFE there is a lot more demand for me to do work more often rather than slacking off and writing on this blog.

I recently purchased the BBC documentary “Planet Earth” on Blu-Ray from Amazon and got that yesterday, It has stunning graphics with its (near) full HD. Haven’t really had time to watch it yet but I’ve skimmed.

I also got a Central Splitter installed in the insane hope that it might vaguely increase my ADSL speed. Of course the guy who installed it just put it on the second pair instead of laying new cable so nothing good came of it. I’m still syncing at 4300 – 5100 (KB). So there’s another waste of a perfectly good $200.

What I will say on that is it does rule out future issues related to Telstra. If they think its a fault in the splitter or that my lines aren’t properly being filtered then they are indeed wrong!

A word of advice: Simon Hackett recently released a guide on how to increase your ADSL(1/2) speed on the Internode blog. One of these methods include what I did above. Read that section of his post VERY well – We installed a central splitter because we had more than 2 phones and bad line noise (which is now gone). Don’t rush out and get a central splitter installed if you only have 1 phone/router installed!

(Though I’ve known about this for a while) The ADSL1 limit in the line profile settings (either router side or dslam side) works perfectly provided your sync is below 5000. If you are getting anything from 3000-5000 KB sync switch your line profile to ADSL 1 (or use your router) and you could go from that to 4000 – 8000 KB.

Side Note: I just fixed all the old links to cdn. and aidan. so videos and links should work. Except those that were destroyed in the fire of 2008 (ahh rm -rf).

Thats all for now anyway. I may actually post something interesting later :D

Thieves

Someone is sitting on my internet connection. I don’t like the fact that someone. Is sitting. On my internet connection!

Torrent Box

Before anything else: The Advert at the top there is for MY company. It’s not random advertising I genuinely want you to buy stuff from me!

I’ve finally setup my torrent box/media center. Presently it sits in the lounge connected to the projector acting as an always-on web-server-remote-access-proxy-torrent-media-center machine. So yes somewhat split purpose!

Specs on this wonderful machine:

  • Windows 7 Enterprise (Yes, I got it from DECS)
  • AMD Opteron 8212HE (x1)
  • Corsair 1GB Ram Stick DDR3 (x2)
  • Western Digital 1TB “Green” SATA (x1)
  • SATA Blu-Ray Reader (x1)
  • ATI Radeon 4850 (x1)

The rest of the box is really just random old bits and bobs. The CPU is quite old now but seems powerful enough to handle the whole split-purpose & HD video playback thing. I’m currently running the Deluge WebUI automatically adding files from a shared network drive as well as the WebUI of course.

I’ve set up a few remote-access password protected URI for it of course being on a dynamic IP never helps. The box runs downloads at about 560~kB/s on a good day which is stretching the max speed of my connection here. Fortunately for me I have unlimited uploads in the plan I’m on so seeding isn’t a problem.
